Architect and designer Rodolfo Dordoni belongs to an esteemed group that includes names like Achille Castiglioni, Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Marco Zanuso, and Vico Magistretti. Like the elite generation of designers before him, Dordoni was also born in Milan, Italy. He also went to Milan’s Politecnico University where he graduated with a degree in architecture in 1979.
Born in 1954, in what historically was a become a breeding ground for great designers, Dordoni continued with the brilliant work that his predecessors from Milan had done before him.
Dordoni and his generation of Italian designers (such as Michele De Lucchi) became the heirs of the design tradition started by the likes of the Castiglioni brothers, Zanuso, and Magistretti.
Soon after his graduation, Dordoni began to work with some of the leading furniture and lighting brands creating a long line of products for them. He went on to become the artistic director of some of the biggest Italian and international design companies.
As an art director, he was responsible for Artemide’s glass collection, FontanaArte’s furniture collection, and Foscarini’s lamps among others. He joined Minnoti as the company’s artistic director in 1997 and continues to serve that position to this day.
Some of the other famous brands that he worked for as a designer and consultant include Cappellini, Cassina, Ceramica Flaminia, Ceramiche Mutina, Dada, Dornbracht, Driade, Emu, Ernestomeda, Fiam Italia, Moroso, and FLOS.
Over the years, Dordoni has created a wide array of products for these companies including furniture, light fixtures, office machinery, and automobiles. The man is responsible for creating nearly 250 products from 18 different manufacturers. His understated-yet-expressive style has captured the imagination of the design world.
His creations for FLOS speak of his unique style – modest and understated – whether it’s the All Light wall light, the sophisticated Pochette wall light, the free-standing Ray F floor lamp, or the ultra-modern Ray S pendant lamp.
In 2005, he set up Studio Dordoni Architetti in collaboration with fellow architects Luca Zaniboni and Alessandro Acerbi in Milan focused solely on architectural planning and interior design. The studio now has a global list of projects developing residential and commercial buildings including private villas and houses as well as showrooms; exhibition stands and pavilions; and restaurants and hotels.
The designer, who is shocked by the beauty found at every corner in Rome, admits he never stops working on a normal day. “I take inspiration from everywhere so I can’t stop thinking about work.” Professional accomplishments aside, Dordoni is a designer grounded in reality who is just happy to do the work he likes!
