Meet Shantell Martin and May Day Lamp by Flos
14th Feb 2019
Meet Shantell Martin and discover May Day, the iconic lamp by Konstantin Grcic.
At FLOS we celebrate a range of international designers who blend originality, technology and human elements to create innovative objects. Shantell Martin is a transformative artist whose style is unmistakable as it plays with stick figures, lines and words. She invites her viewers to share in her creative process. Watch a video of Martin converting blank space into a rich story.
Her creations aren’t standalone pieces as they complement a range of environments. She draws on almost any surface and her work has caught the attention of a range of iconic brands. Martin has worked with brands such as Nike, Tiffany & Co, Puma, FLOS, Vitra, and Max Mara. In late 2018 she was asked to collaborate with the New York City Ballet and create large scale drawings in the Lincoln Center in New York City.
Like Martin, Konstantin Grcic, an acclaimed industrial designer, invites in the human element and his thoughtful designs work across an array of spaces. Grcic designed May Day as a tool with endless applications; it wasn’t created to specifically hang over a table or next to a sofa. It comes in handy in all sorts of unexpected situations and with Martin we decided to see just where May Day can shine.
We started out in Martin’s Jersey City studio and then traveled through Brooklyn with the May Day, placing it in unexpected places. You can spot the May Day in a laundromat, pizzeria, and a recording studio. She even added her signature, whimsical lines to Grcic’s creation, fusing together the work of these two designers. Explore the endless possibilities of the May Day and how Martin can reimagine spaces.
See it yourself.
